Pete McDonald: Music

You Never Came Down

(Pete McDonald)
Rustling leaves on a windy street corner
Fall hides thoughts of the summer days
And in the west you crossed a Colorado stream
To climb a fabled mountain, just to see what that would mean

Whispering clouds across a fading sky
And I remember you loved the mountain air
Huddled, cold, and restless dreaming about what we would do
But nothing ever came of that for you

But I’ve got time to take it slowly
And I’ve got time to do what’s right for me
I’ve got time to take it slowly
I’ve got time to carry on

Blue light on a computer screen
A silent, screaming message
You climbed so high but you didn’t come back
So they went looking
I ran to the phone but I knew in my bones
That you would not return
Waiting, anticipating, helpless cause I knew you were gone

At home I lie awake, turning in my bed
Seems like I’ve been up for days and days
Wishing for a sign to tell me you’re not gone
Wanting to feel you while I try to move on

But, I’ll return…I’ll return
To find you somewhere in the western sky
Somewhere around that hidden mountain town
Where the peaks stretch on forever, but you never came down

But I’ve got time to take it slowly
And I’ve got time to do what’s right for me
I’ve got time to take it slowly
I’ve got time to carry on
