Pete McDonald: Music

Denise

(Pete McDonald and Elise Huneke Stone)
Go somewhere to remind yourself
of how she used to be.
Do something that will ground you
and bring you back from sea.
She left her portraits and dancing trees
in the colors of the dawn.
Can’t believe this time has come.
Can’t believe she’s gone.

Everybody has their way
of dealing with the pain.
Me, I sleep, and hope for dreams.
and wander in the rain.
I look for omens, watch for signs
in every song and sky.
Look into the passing faces.
Looking for her eyes.

Walked through rooms of canvases
hanging on the wall
Got lost inside the loss of her,
Didn’t know who to call.
Stood before the Spanish silks
mysterious and worn
Can’t believe this time has come.
Can’t believe she’s gone.

How did I get so far away
from those I love the best?
And when we’re faced with losing light,
how can we ever rest?
A night that lasts forever
still comes as a surprise.
Look into the passing faces.
Looking for her eyes.

From her home I took a paintbrush
I took a broken bowl
I took a poem she wrote that branded fire against my soul.
I took a look inside myself
I took another chance.
But I never took the time to say goodbye.

But she knows I dream, and that’s how she can reach me.
And she knows I cry, and that’s how she can teach me.
